The city name originates from the roman settlement Augusta Vindelicorum that was founded in 1500 BC by emperor Augustus of the roman empire.
Augsburg is the third largest city of bavaria and is located in the south west of this federal state. The origins of Augsburg go back to the foundation of the roman settlement Augusta Vindelicorum by roman emperor Augustus 15 BC, what makes it to the second oldest city of germany after Trier. This roman castra became capital of Raetia, a roman province.
Augsburg became a free imperial city on 9 march 1276.
