Bremen, area 325 km², population 548 000 (city state)
Bremen is situated on the riverbanks of the Weser about 65 km south of the estuary into the North Sea. Claudius Ptolomaeus mentioned a settlement of chauci tribes named Fabiranum in 150 AD, the first mentioned bishop of Bremen was Willehad I. of Bremen in 787. The first town fortification walls where built around 1030.
Having about 20 000 inhabitants in 1350, Bremen has the second biggest population of northern germany today.
