The area of Brunswick was settled by Cherusci and Angrivarii tribes in germanic times, these tribes have been expelled by Saxons around 500 AD.
The origins of Brunswick date back to the 9th century, however it was first documentary mentioned 1031. The rulers of Brunswick where the Brunonen, the descendants of Duke Bruno of Saxony. From 1142 it was residence town of Duke Henry the lion of Saxony and Bavaria and later residence of the rulers of the Duchy of Brunswick. The city was a member of the hanseatic league from the 13th to 17th century and a political and cultural center.
