Dortmund, area 280 km², population 588 000, federal state: North Rhine-Westphalia
The city of Dortmund was first documentary mentioned in 880 as Throtmanni. The town was reconstructed after a fire, observing rules of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I. who made Dortmund his residence town for the next 2 years. The city became a free imperial city in 1220 and also became a member of the hanseatic league. Around 1320 the town was first named as Dorpmunde.
