Hamburg, official named Free and hanseatic city of Hamburg, a trade center and important major oversea port city is Germanys second largest city, situated on the Elbe river.
A castle named Hammaburg between the rivers Alster and Elbe was built by Charlemagne in 808 AD as a stronghold against slavic tribes. From 834 Hamburg was the seat of the roman catholic bishop, the first bishop Ansgar became apostle of the north.
Hamburg gained the status of a free imperial city by order of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I. Barbarossa in 1189.
