Hanover (german: Hannover), area 204 km², population 520 000, capital city of the federal state: Lower Saxony
The origins of Hanover are going back to a medieval settlement on a flood protected bank of the river Leine. A market place in the are of Hanover was first mentioned in the Miracula Sancti Bernwardi documents of Hildesheim around 1150 as Vicus Hanovere. Hanover gained town privileges in 1241. The city was allowed to build a town fortification in 1392, in this time it was also a member of the hanseatic league.
Hanover was residence town of Duke George of Brunswick - Lueneburg from 1636, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz was engaged by Duke Johann Friedrich in 1676 to his dead in 1716, the composer George Friederic Handel (Georg Friedrich Haendel) was engaged as conductor in the residence of prince elector Georg Ludwig from 1710 - 1712.
Today Hanover is one of the mayor centers of northern germany and best known for hosting important annual expositions
