Ingolstadt was first documentary mentioned on 6 february 806 as Ingoldes Stat and gained town privileges around 1250. It was the capital of the state Bavaria - Ingolstadt from 1392 to 1447 before it was united with Bavaria - Landshut. The Ludwig Maximilian University was founded in 1472 by Duke Louis IX. of bavaria, the university moved to Landshut in 1800.
Ingolstadt is the place where the Reinheitsgebot, the oldest food law in the world was signed by Duke William IV. of bavaria in 1516. The Reinheitsgebot is the beer purity law, regulating the production of beer. The only ingredients that are allowed are water, hops and barley.
