Kaiserslautern is situated on the edge of the Palatinate Forest, the biggest coherent forest of Europe. Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa of the House of Hohenstaufen who reigned the Holy Roman Empire from 1155 to 1190 and had his hunting retreat in Kaiserslautern gave the city its epithet Barbarossa town.
The Palatinate Forest and the adjacent Northern Vogues Mountains in France are a UNESCO Biosphere reserve, the Palatinate Forest has an area of 1771km² and has a huge number of castles, ruins and well signposted hiking and biking trails.
