Kassel, area 160 km², population 194 000, federal state: Hesse
A tribe named Chatti settled in the area before roman times, there was a settlement named Castellum Cattorum, giving Kassel its name. Kassel was first documentary mentioned 913 in documents of Conrad I of Germany. In 1567 Kassel became the capital of the territory of Hesse - Kassel and a center of calvinist protestantism.
The brothers Grimm lived in Kassel and wrote their fairy tales in the early 19th century.
