The coastline around the Kiel fjord was settled by normanic and viking tribes, it was founded in 1233 by Count Adolph IV of Schauenburg and Holstein as Holstenstadt tom Kyle and received town privileges 1242.
Kiel was a member of the hanseatic League from 1284 until 1518 when it was expelled for housing pirate ships. Duke Christian of Holstein - Gottorp founded the University of Kiel on the 29. september 1655.
