The beginning of Krefeld was the roman castra Gelduba which later merged into a settlement named Krinvelde in medieval times. Krefeld was first documentary mentioned 1105 in documents of Werden Abbey (Kloster Werden). The privilege to held a market was granted in 1361 and town privileges were granted on 1. october 1373.
In 1584 Krefeld was largely destroyed in a war between troops of the Archbishopric of Cologne and troops of the Kingdom of Bavaria and was uninhabited for almost two decades.
