Mannheim was the Residence town of the Electoral Palatinate (Kurpfalz) from 1720 - 1778, it was first documentary mentioned in the Lorsch Codex in 766 and town privileges were granted on 24. january 1607 by Prince Elector Frederick IV (Friedrich IV) of the Palatinate.
The first dandy horse, a running machine, was invented by Baron Karl von Drais in Mannheim and patented in january 1818, the first Automobile was invented in Mannheim by Carl Benz in 1886, and the famous Lanz Bulldog tractor was also produced in Mannheim from 1921.
