A settlement named Roztoc was founded by polabian slavs on the Baltic Sea coast at the estuary of the river Warnow in the 11th century. In the 13th and 1th century Rostock was an important city of the Hanseatic League, in 1419 the university of Rostock, the oldest university of Europe, was founded.
