Saarbruecken, area 167 km², population 178 000, capital of the federal state Saarland
The area of Saarbruecken was incorporated by the roman empire in the 1st century, the town was first documentary mentioned 999 as castellum Sarabrucca, the area around Saarbruecken was settled by a celtic tribe named Mediomatrici.
Formerly industrial and transportation center, iron and steel production, optical instruments, construction materials and machinery, coal industry.
Saarbruecken became french territory for 15 years under the treaty of Versailles in 1919 for compensation the first world war, after these 15 years there was a Referendum in 1935 where more than 90% voted for a reunification with germany.
French zone of occupation in 1945, separate zone Saar protectorate from 1946, political reunited with germany on 1st january 1957.
